Weaving networks of teams & strategic development: The impact of changing communication structure on small group outcomes
Abstract
This study examines the relationship between communication network structures and group members' perceived productivity and satisfaction. The study is based on the fields of small group research and social network analysis. Drawing on Scott Poole's concept of weaving what traditionally constitutes a group is refined while the independence and saturation (IS) theory is used to develop research questions. Using an experimental design participants self-select a sequence of communication network structures to be deployed in solving a complex problem. Findings suggest that there is a relationship between selected communication network structures and perceived productivity and satisfaction. However, the findings also suggest that IS may be broaden to incorporate task saturation to better explain changes in group members' perceived productivity and satisfaction.^
