Dynamo Sideways

Terrance L. Manning, Purdue University

Abstract

Dynamo Sideways is a novel in stories about the generational identity of the Gibson family living in Emporium, Pennsylvania. Dynamo Gibson, who the novel follows from age eight to forty-three, is nicknamed "sideways" after a limp he's had since he was a child. However, the actual term "sideways" is a portrayal of the generational and familial idea of identity as it is passed down from Dynamo's grandfather, the original Dynamo Gibson. The stories move between members of the family, dropping through the family line as time progresses from early eighties to post-9/11. This novel in stories explores ideas of family, of sexuality and violence, of fatherhood and dreams, performance and reality, and the way art is used to transcend and change those traits inherited through blood.^
