Measure of physician pain assessment

Casey J Coker, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the method, reliability, and validity of the Measure of Physician Pain Assessment (MPPA). Valid and reliable pain assessment is vital in the effective treatment of cancer pain. The MPPA provides a method to evaluate the thoroughness of cancer pain assessment. The current study established the initial reliability of this measure. In our sample, we found the MPPA to be reliable in evaluating physician-pain communication. In addition, researchers easily trained coders to use the MPPA with good inter-rater reliability. Future studies assessing the MPPA in real patient encounters are necessary.
