A pilot study testing the effect of the Johari Window on the self-awareness domain of Emotional Intelligence in Generation Y

Abstract

Emotional Intelligence has been studied for several decades and studies have shown that there are many benefits of having high Emotional Intelligence. It has also been determined that one is able to increase Emotional Intelligence competencies. However, it is unclear exactly what steps need to be taken in order to increase Emotional Intelligence. Because the Emotional Intelligence construct is large, this pilot study focused on one of the four domains of Emotional Intelligence, self-awareness, the keystone of Emotional Intelligence. Using a true experimental design with a survey as the data collection method, this pilot study investigated the effects of the Johari Window, an individual intervention, on the self-awareness domain of Emotional Intelligence. The outcome of the data analyses revealed a positive correlation with the intervention for several questions in the survey but, ultimately more investigation and experimenting remain. Further investigation of self-awareness and a specific methodology to improve it could be expanded into a study to include the remaining three domains of Emotional Intelligence.
