A model to assess sustainability and appropriateness of small scale wind energy technologies
Abstract
Using the combination of both qualitative and quantitative research, this study created and validated a model to assess sustainability and appropriateness of small scale wind energy technologies. Participants in the study included 21 interviewees from Lafayette, Indiana, with different backgrounds and with or without experience in this kind of technology. The secondary method, quantitative, is embedded within the predominant method, qualitative, to provide a supporting role in procedures. This study demonstrates that for a technology to be really appropriate and sustainable, more than an engineering perspective is needed. Given this, economic, environmental and social dimensions were all considered. The implication of this model is to provide some guidelines for people interested in developing this kind of projects in the most sustainable and appropriate way.
