Motivating the millennial generation of it employees

Abstract

This study identified the workplace rewards and motivators the youngest generation of employees, the millennial generation or generation Y, finds attractive in organizations looking to hire them for fulltime Information Technology (IT) positions. The research was conducted with students currently enrolled in IT courses or as IT employees at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and with full-time IT employees employed throughout the state of Indiana. The study contained three sections. First, the study asked participants to rate various motivational factors on a Likert type scale, 5 being very important to 1 being unimportant. Secondly, the participants were asked to rank order various motivational factors as a method to reinforce the survey's reliability. Lastly, the study asked participants a set of four dichotomous questions as a method to further identify primary motivators and reinforce the survey's reliability. The results from this study, in particular the correlations between the demographic type questions and motivator importance are useful to IT leaders, human resource departments, and organizations as they continue to see an increasing number of millennials enter the workforce.
