Effects of audiovisual media on the acquisition of listening comprehension in French

Shannon Becker, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the integration of audiovisual media-based activities into the instruction of French as an L2 would have a measurable impact on the acquisition of listening comprehension in that language. While preliminary theories have been established in this area based on Second Language Acquisition literature, relatively few studies have attempted to measure the effect of audiovisual pedagogical tools on the subsequent listening comprehension skills of a group of students. In the present study, two groups of students were tested on their listening comprehension skills before and after a four-week learning phase consisting of lesson plans based on traditional teaching methods in the control group and audiovisual media-based methods in the experimental group. The experimental group showed considerably higher scores in the posttest and the delayed posttest than did the control group. These results were discussed as they relate to potential implications for SLA and pedagogy.
