Corporate social responsbility: An internal perspective

Karen Lynne DeGan, Purdue University

Abstract

The objective of this study was to gain knowledge of the internal perspective of an organization that external audiences identify as socially responsible. An internal perspective allows for the employee viewpoint to be explored. Much of the existing research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) focused on the external benefits of social responsibility but this paper illustrates the internal advantages. A connection between how employees view their place of employment and how they believe others view the organization was found. What CSR means to those employed by a socially responsible organization is explored. This research shows a connection between positive employee perceptions of the organization and employee involvement in CSR efforts, such as community service. Overall, employees felt proud to say they work at a well-known socially responsible organization. This research suggests that employees advocated for their place of employment because they are proud to work there. Although this research shows many connections between CSR and employee perspectives it is inconclusive. This research provides a great starting ground for exploring the internal perspective of social responsibility.
