Contextual guessing and dictionary use in the L2 acquisition of vocabulary in Portuguese

Cezar Augusto Ponti Medeiros, Purdue University

Abstract

This study examines the L2 acquisition of vocabulary among English-speaking learners of Portuguese at an academic setting. Specifically, the study analyzes the extent to which the combined use of contextual guessing and dictionary use techniques is most beneficial for L2 learners than the use of one technique only. Previous research has argued that vocabulary acquisition happens through reading. One strategy that could be implemented by L2 instructors in order to improve students' acquisition of vocabulary would be the combination of these two approaches. However, the results show no significant difference between the final scores of the groups that used either technique solely or the group that integrated these two techniques.
