Zapatagraphy & Algiers point

Chad Hardy, Purdue University

Abstract

Zapatagraphy is a meditation on Emiliano Zapata constructed using the computer program Gnoetry. The seed-texts used were Ludwig Wittgenstein, Gertrude Stein, and Mary Shelley. The computer-generated poems were placed in a selection of found texts, ranging from biographical material on Zapata to the poetry of Manuel Arce. Algiers Point explores a number of issues surrounding Hurricane Katrina, and was compiled from a massive collection of news reports, official documents, blog posts, and the advertising language surrounding them online. Most of this long poem was written using a computer program called Mchain. Together, these two pieces explore the possibilities of computational poetics.
