Intimate partner violence and self-regulation

Jacqueline M Schram, Purdue University

Abstract

The present study examined self-regulation resources (SRR) depletion, propensity for intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration, trait aggression, and impulsivity facets as predictors of aggression towards an imagined partner. SRR depletion, propensity for IPV perpetration, negative urgency, and lack of perseverance were significant predictors of aggression towards an imagined partner after hearing a conflict scenario. This study also provides evidence that anger arousal may mediate the relationship between depletion with provocation and partner-directed aggression.
