Information architecture at Purdue University: A report on an internship with external relations department
Abstract
There are marketing resources set in place in order to contact students, faculty & staff, and alumni when there are events, lectures, and general information that relates to them specifically. But getting lost in these e-mails, press releases, and newspaper articles is the need to facilitate information not only to the intended audiences, but also, the audiences which wouldn’t have initially been thought of to contact. Those audiences are the audiences which hold interests that differ from the event, lecture, or information posting, yet, hold that small interest lingering in the back of their mind which needs to be grasped upon reading the information. Purdue University's External Relations department requested that a new information web resource be created that would be suited in marketing Purdue to Purdue. Contributing to their internal corporate communication structure, this report is looking to create an entity which is easily accessible, clearly structured by allowing all academic departments, athletic departments, faculty & staff, alumni, etc…to access the site, providing important information regarding events, functions, and all types of miscellaneous facts regarding their respective programs. Upon completion of this internship, this report hopes to have designed a resource that is different than anything previously created and that it adheres to every audience in a manner that is not only accessible, but that is also intriguing to the viewer’s eye so as to keep their attention, and not only bringing them back time and time again, but also utilizing the cheapest form of advertising to others, word of mouth.
