Lifting the veil: Nonnative speakers of English and the writing center

Matthew C Allen, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to understand how writing centers can better serve non-native speakers of English. Specifically, this paper argues that the dominant tutoring model, the standard peer collaborative model, is not an effective method for helping many non-native speakers, and that this model has been undermined by empirical research or theoretical arguments. Consequently, this paper argues that the best way for writing center people to help non-native speakers is by stepping back to rethink this model and to then move forward to create a new model of tutoring based on complexity and supported by empirical research.
