Assessment of Indiana 4-H youth and their community contribution: Indiana 4-H study of positive youth development

Laura V Bossaer, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the amount of community Contribution that is associated between 4-H and non 4-H members. This study focuses on the Five C's of Positive Youth Development (PYD), which in turn lead to the Sixth C, Contribution. A survey was used to examine the elements of adolescent development, particularly the factors that promote Positive Youth Development. This study builds on the work of Dr. Richard Lerner (2005) and researchers at Tufts University in collaboration with the National 4-H Council. This research study was administered in 22 Indiana counties. Extension Youth Educators served as the primary data collectors in collaborating with Indiana youth in grades 8 through 10. Results from this study indicate that 4-H members are less likely to participate in risk taking behaviors than their non 4-H counterparts. Results also show that 4-H youth have a higher level of Contribution within their communities. These findings support the work of Dr. Richard Lerner (2005) and the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development.
