Methods of Improving Cost Effectiveness and Performance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Abstract

This thesis presents recent work concerning about the method to increase the cost-effectiveness of using UAV to perform a certain task such as tracking, searching, and surveillance. A collaboration of different sized UAV is developed that allows large UAV carrier carries small low-cost and disposable mission UAV which will perform the task. This method combines the benet of the long endurance of UAV carrier and low cost, high maneuverability of small mission UAV and solve the problem of short fight time of mission UAV. This thesis also presents an innovated type of UAV that has improved energy efficiency, flight time and endurance but similar cost. This UAV has two counter-rotating, tilt-able rotors and a xed wing to provide aerodynamic lift and decrease the energy consumption for lift aircraft weight. One prototype and one revised version of aircraft are made in this idea. Both simulation and test ight experiment were done in order to verify the idea. Many materials and building methods are used to constructed these two aircraft.
