Exploring New Approaches to Cultural Heritage Tourism in China Through Social Entrepreneurship: A Case Study of China Jiaxie
Abstract
Social entrepreneurship is a relatively new concept in China, but social entrepreneurs have adopted innovative approaches to preserve cultural heritage and support their communities. This study focuses on a case of preserving China Jiaxie ([special characters omitted]) through social entrepreneurship in the Chinese context. Within the qualitative case study approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with both the founder and staff. Thematic content analysis was utilized to analyze the data. The motivation for establishing and participating in this social enterprise, the challenges of balancing dual missions, the success factors in the operations, and the role of traditional Chinese traits were explored. It was found that the China Jiaxie social enterprise is similar to Western models as a social entrepreneur, motivated by addressing social needs, takes the leadership with a team of participants following him. It was noted that there are issues in balancing the mission and the business including mission awareness and commitment within the team, stakeholder management, and limited resources mobilization. It was also found that social entrepreneurs in cultural heritage preservation are creating important assets for tourism destinations, but they may lack effective communication with stakeholders and the local community.
