Automatic magazine cover design

Ali Jahanian, Purdue University

Abstract

With progress in technology the idea of personal communication has been reached by means of internet web services such as web blogs, forums and web magazines. There are several tools that contribute to semi-automatic/ automatic composition of the idea of self-publishing. This follows with including aesthetics to the generated media. Therefore, designing an aesthetically pleasing media is a conspicuous challenge that all semi-automatic/ automatic tools tackle on. The main costumers of these tools are non-designer designers. Recently, the idea of web magazines has been in the focus of web service providers. MagCloud by HP Labs, for instance, supports users to publish magazines and advertisements for either web or print. Our purpose in this thesis is to tackle on the idea of automatic design of magazine cover. In order to approach the problem we have studied the functionality of magazine cover, the elements of it and sought to understand how professional designers and magazine art directors create a magazine cover. The functionality of cover is to attract the consumer and of course to tell the main message(s) at the first glance. We present how we have devised some algorithms and methods to implement the lessons that we have learned though our interviews with professional designers and our literature review on magazine cover design. We then support our approach by means of presenting a software tool and some of its results. A discussion about results and the future work will conclude our work in this thesis.
