Towards the development of an ontological framework for drug-loaded film manufacture
Abstract
The development of new pharmaceutical products and dosage forms is a process characterized for being expensive, time consuming and information intensive. An appropriate management of the information is crucial, as it needs to be done in a friendly but powerful environment. The ontological approach as proposed in (Venkatasubramanian, Zhao et al. 2006) is particularly useful for this purpose since it enables us to create an appropriate decision support for the process as well as storing and searching for all the process related information. This present work will be focused in two aspects: designing the ontological framework for all the steps involved in the oral film production and the development of different models that will enable to correlate formulation and processing variables with properties of the manufactured films. For the design of the ontological framework, an extensive literature review has been made in order to identify all the different required steps and processes required for the films manufacture as well as all the related relevant information. For the development of different models for correlating formulation and properties of the final product, several experimental designs were constructed. The aim of this part of the work was not only to generate data-driven models but also provide a better understanding of the system from a pharmaceutical formulator's perspective.
