The Looking-Glass House

Kelsey Ann Sandy, Purdue University

Abstract

Set in East Texas in the 1960s, The Looking-Glass House is a novel about a Catholic home for pregnant teens and the Southern Baptist town that disapproves of it. Miss Margaret Harmond was born and raised on the property of Saint Therese's Home for Girls and wants nothing more than to join the sisterhood. But when Margaret falls in love with Frankie, one of the Home's pregnant girls, she is forced to question her beliefs and choose, ultimately, between life and death. The novel deals with issues of race, religion, and sexuality.
