An exploratory study of Chinese leave-taking
Abstract
The current study is an exploratory study that focuses on leave-taking strategies in Mandarin Chinese. Previous research studied the definition, function, factors, similarities, and differences between English and Chinese leave-taking. Compared with other speech acts, the Chinese leave-taking strategies have not received much attention. The present study focuses on finding native speakers’ leave-taking strategy in Mandarin Chinese, through oral data. By collecting data from a popular TV drama in Mandarin Chinese, this study finds that “reason” is the most used strategy among native speakers of Chinese when they take leave. Based on previous leave-taking strategies, three new strategies are added according to the data.
