Description

Online searching of databases is rapidly changing traditional methods of information retrieval by making it easier to identify relevant single articles. The databases cover a wider range of journals than is of ten available in the local library, which is simultaneously tending to reduce its coverage in response to severe budget pressures. Consequently, many single documents are provided as photocopies through the network of major lending libraries since few publishers supply single articles other than reprints at the time the journal is published.

Virtually all of this document delivery relies heavily upon physical transport of a document from one place to another with the result that the information received is rarely timely. Developments in image handling technology and satellite communications offer the prospects of immediate access to large stores of information. The ADONIS project is an attempt to turn these technological possibilities into reality.
