Deformation of solids and structures often involve heterogeneities that govern mechanical behavior, including strength, ductility, toughness, and ultimately failure. These heterogeneities are due to the microstructure of the solid, microscale variations, and deviations of local strength. Over the past decade, the application of advanced tools for the interrogation of materials and structures at the micron size scale is revolutionizing mechanics. We are now able to measure and simulate the mechanical behavior of structures with high accuracy and fidelity, specifically with an emphasis on determining the role of microstructure in the mechanical behavior of materials. This symposium features new discoveries and advances in the fields of mechanics of solids and materials, with an emphasis to bring together leading research scientists and engineers to present their work and foster new ideas about developing the state-of-the-art experimental tools and modeling approaches. Topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Characterization of heterogeneous strains
  • Role of interfaces and grain boundaries in mechanical behavior
  • Determining structure-property relationships
  • Characterizing heterogeneous deformations
  • Microstructure-based failure mechanisms (fatigue, damage, fracture, creep, etc.)
  • Meso-scale modeling and in situ experimentation
