While the markets of solar and wind technologies are booming in most parts of the world the diffusion of these technologies in Africa is very slow. One reason is the lack of qualified staff. The paper shows ways of cooperation between European and African universities to enhance capacity building in the field of sustainable energies. Relevant outcomes are new university programs in the field of renewable and sustainable energies, preparation and provision of short-courses for technical training courses, conferences, scientific journals and a regional Southern African platform of knowledge sharing. The outcomes were compiled in a 3,5 years project funded by the EU. The project ended March 2017. The project led to several follow-up initiatives.
