Description

Short Abstract:

Considerable discussion with regional stakeholders has occurred around the concept of a STEM skill gap. A reoccurring theme with regional employers seem frustrated that skills necessary for the workplace are not adequately provided in K-12 or higher education. We assembled a team to evaluate two aspects of the perceived gap. First we surveyed ten regional stakeholders to articulate their interpretation of the skills gap and perceived solutions. Secondly we reviewed (46 area school districts) standardized test scores (ACT Science and Math) and benchmarked regional scores relative to state and national standards; post high school graduation plans; high school courses offered, and extracurricular STEM opportunities to better understand where academic opportunities and skills supported post-secondary education and/or work force development.
