Abstract
The CPNP Purdue chapter is a student organization that strives to advance mental health awareness and education, reduce stigma, and volunteer in the local community. CPNP Purdue is strengthened by collaboration with partner organizations, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and Home with Hope, a Lafayette-based recovery housing center. NAMI advocates for effective treatment and education for families affected by mental illness in the surrounding community. Home with Hope provides a continuum of care and environment conducive to recovery following treatment for substance use disorders. These nonprofit partnerships rely heavily upon volunteers, donations, and advocates to provide services and support.
Fatima Khan and Elise Mann have had the opportunity to respond and lead students in organizing unique fundraising events for NAMI-West Central Indiana and in coordinating a number of community outreach events. Both students have been working closely with Home with Hope to provide much-needed items including first aid kits, medication organizers, and HIV/STD testing. This service will be expanded in the coming months to include education materials and discussion groups for residents in the recovery housing center.
The ability for CPNP Purdue student pharmacists to collaborate with community partners can strengthen the events provided to the mental health community. Together, patients in the community are better supported and have compassionate students advocating for their care. As accessible healthcare professionals, student pharmacists are cultivating a valuable opportunity to provide unique services that bridge the gaps faced by community partnerships.
