Description

The development of visual literacy skills is increasingly important for business students graduating into today's visually-driven business environment. Visual literacy (VL) encompasses the skills needed to find, interpret, use, create, and ethically engage with visual information (ACRL, 2022). Within a business context, VL skills allow students to enhance their presentations, communicate their messages effectively, visualize complex information or data into succinct visual representations, and tell compelling stories. Further, well-developed visuals can help bridge language barriers when communicating with stakeholders worldwide (Sweeny & Hughes, 2017). Despite the apparent benefits of these VL competencies, business students may need more direct training and support to effectively navigate and create visual information. This lightning talk will present the preliminary results from a mixed methods needs assessment, which explores how Purdue Libraries can aid business students and faculty in cultivating VL skills that can be applied in academic and professional settings.
