Description

Since 1971 the Central Library of Technical University for Heavy Industry /Miskolc/ has launched a large scale activity to achieve co-operation and integration on the following fields: the adaptation of the METADEX /USA/ computerized metallurgical information system in Hungary; the acquisition of the special literature in co-operation with the four large chemical works of the region; the establishment of a regional translation office.

The work is very fruitful on all the three mentioned field and our experience that have accumulated in the course of our work are suitable to draw theoretical conclusions that refer to the general rules of co-operation.

A co-operation can be lasting only if it is based on the identity of interests. The process can preserve its vitality only if the partners are connected by the willingness to solve not one but many common problems together. Within the co-operation the partners are equal, i.e. the hegemony is excluded but it is necessary that one of the members, the best is if the members can change each other from time to time should be in charge of the organization of the community's actions. The representatives of the partners must be authorized to bring decisions in order to preserve the vitality and flexibility of the co-operation. Each member must provide solid services on the fields he has undertaken. In the course of the co-operation the personal factors and the human sensibility must be always kept in mind. The integration encourages to quality work because the circle of the tasks is narrower and the voluntary undertaking of tasks stimulates to better performance. The integration may uncover the reserves that can be exploited by discontinuing the parallel work at the single members. The co-operation also can be the source of providing useful methodological aid. The sponsoring institution of the library backs the co-operation only if it directly feels and experience the advantages it receives from the library's extended activity.
