ANALYTICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF UNDERGROUND COMPRESSED AIR ENERGY STORAGE

KUAN-HORNG LEE, Purdue University

Abstract

The flow equation for a varying-thickness, irregular-boundary, and multi-well aquifer reservoir is formulated by a two-dimensional analysis. The alternating direction implicit (ADI) method is employed to solve the flow equation. Coupling between the aquifer reservoir and the aboveground rotating machinery is implemented by a hybrid bisection-secant iteration scheme. The aquifer reservoir is also simulated by a continuous electric analog experiment. Computational results from the numerical calculation are compared with the experimental results. Results from a sample calculation of a ten-well reservoir are presented to demonstrate the inter-well interference. Finally, the accuracy of the numerical computation is also verified by the principle of mass conservation.
