Influence of attachment towards a media figure on a person's relationship satisfaction

Stephen P Stewart, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to understand the factor of whether or not having an attachment towards a media figure has an influence on a person’s relationship satisfaction in a romantic relationship. Data was collected from 46 participants who were at least 18 years of age, and were currently in a romantic relationship for at least six months. It was hypothesized that increased levels of celebrity worship would result in decreased levels of both relationship satisfaction and romantic attachment towards one’s partner. While the results failed to support the hypothesis, it was found that celebrity worship is common among adults. These findings support the research of previous studies on celebrity worship, indicating that celebrity worship exists amongst all age groups.
