Abstract

In Vietnam, the National Housing Development Strategy for the period of 2021 - 2030 with a vision to 2045 has affirmed that social housing is one of the important contents of economic development policy. The situation of social housing development in the past 15 years has shown some initial positive results in building new systems of concepts and awareness on the importance of social housing, the legal framework, in addition to policies for the implementation and development of social housing, as well as the implementation of several social housing programs for specific target groups of people. However, the achievements are still limited due to many shortcomings found in the current implementation processes. This article focuses on analyzing the progress of social housing development in Vietnam, the difficulties and challenges in the policy making, planning and architecture practices. Furthermore, the paper explores the social housing demands by 2030 in Vietnam, thereby creating a basis for proposing several social housing development models that prove to be more suitable in consideration of the local socio-economic context to reach the goal of sustainable city development in the future.
