Abstract

In the context of contemporary Vietnamese society, religious buildings not only serve a religious function and role but are also increasingly involved in community life and the architectural and landscape spaces of urban and rural areas. Catholic churches in Northern Vietnam are a typical example, clearly reflecting the process of integration and development in the face of socio-economic, cultural, and construction technology changes. This article focuses on analyzing the transformation of church architecture in this region during the contemporary period, through aspects such as spatial organization, architectural form, construction materials and technology, and the relationship with the local landscape and community context. Based on a survey of several typical buildings in Northern Vietnam, the article points out the trends of adaptation between Catholic tradition and local elements and the increasingly developing role of churches today. The research results contribute to clarifying the architectural and cultural value, proposing some design directions for contemporary Catholic churches in Northern Vietnam, aiming for harmony between faith, cultural identity, and community life.
