Abstract
A large amount of solid concrete waste construction results in enormous waste for construction projects and is a severe source of landfill pollution. Indonesian contractors have made several efforts to overcome this problem; however, they have yet to represent local contractors. Research in construction waste management has been conducted, which provides a breakthrough for local construction companies to implement green construction and increase their business performance and social responsibility. First, this paper reviews the weaknesses, needs, and possible improvements for the local construction companies to manage construction waste by implementing green construction. Second, it introduces a digital concrete crusher (DCC). This machine can destroy solid concrete waste, separate pieces of iron reinforcement, and separate the size of the crushed material according to the grain size of the reusable material; all these processes are controlled wirelessly via Bluetooth connection and monitored via a smartphone. Third, using a case study method, the performance of DCC is compared and discussed with that of traditional construction waste management. Finally, the prospects and challenges of implementing the best waste management practices for local construction companies to implement green construction are presented. This research proposes applying the technological approach to overcome the environmental damages caused by solid concrete waste construction in developing countries, which enables local construction companies to implement sustainable construction projects and improve their business performance by implementing a waste management strategy.
