A Review of BIM and RFID Integration for Circular Economy in Construction

Abstract

The construction industry (CI) is at a pivotal point as sustainability becomes increasingly critical across all sectors. Digital technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) are emerging as powerful tools to drive efficiency and sustainability in construction processes. However, integrating these technologies within a circular economy (CE) framework presents significant challenges and opportunities. This systematic literature review (SLR) delves into the current state of using BIM and RFID tags to support circularity in the CI while investigating the potential of using digital technologies to develop strategies for resource management, waste reduction, and materials reuse. This SLR examines journal and conference papers published between 2013 and 2023 that were found on Web of Science and Scopus databases. Key findings highlight the promise of BIM and RFID integration in enhancing construction efficiency and aligning with CE principles. Challenges in their adoption include the lack of policies and standards, alongside a general unawareness of their potential. Despite their adoption at an increasing rate in the industry, studies focusing on combining BIM with RFID for CE are limited, indicating an emerging field. Overall, this SLR identifies research gaps and opportunities to guide future efforts in leveraging BIM and RFID for circularity in construction.
