Abstract

As our collections become increasingly electronic, standardization of publishing and tracking practices also becomes increasingly critical in order to better serve our users. This paper describes new, updated, and emerging standards and recommended practices that are designed to support the publishing, identification, and retrieval of electronic materials. It provides an overview of standards such as Supplemental Journal Article Materials, Standardized Markup for Journal Articles, KBART (Knowledge Bases and Related Tools), DDA (demand-driven acquisitions), PIE-J (presentation and identification of e-journals), and EPUB (it is not an acronym); how they relate to the work of a broad spectrum of attendees; and particularly why we should care! The objectives of this paper are to demystify the alphabet soup of standards and to highlight the practices that, when implemented, will help us to better serve our users.
