Polish academic libraries suffer from a significant lack of foreign scientific journals. Funds assigned by the Ministry are insufficient. The central system of periodicals subscription also reveals many shortcomings. These problems should be solved through co-operation with the Central Academic Libraries. The Library of the Technical University of Wroclaw is one of the three Central Technical Libraries which undertake various actions in order to increase the level of serviees in the area of foreign scientific journais. Among others, a computer system, SPEC, has been elaborated to assist the subscription of foreign journals for the libraries of Poland.

The Computerized Network of Israeli University Libraries

The last five years have been a period of electronic revolution in Israeli university libraries. During these years, large scale computerization has been carried out. Introduction of the automated systems to the libraries has improved both local library services and the level of resource sharing among the libraries.

A national network has been created under the auspices of the governmental office which finances the universities. The aim of this network is to improve co-operation among the libraries. The network is governed by a committee in which library directors are members. This committee is responsible for preparation and supervision of software development. Maintenance of the software is performed centrally.

All university libraries use the same software on the same type of hardware. Each participating library had to accept this basic condition in order to receive the special grant for the acquisition of a computer and software. 'Aleph' , an integrated library system developed in Israel, has been chosen to be the network software. The same search codes are used in all university libraries. This simplifies use for the readers. The libraries' computers are connected by special telecommunication lines. MARC cataloguing data are held on the central network computer.

Future plans incIude installation of a facsimile network among university libraries in order to speed up delivery of requested documents. This article deals mainly with the network management.

Today, when we talk about information technology issues in library and information services, it is difficult to outline with great precision optimal developmental objectives for these services. The problem with which information providers using sophisticated information technology are confronted is how to plan for the efficient management of information and library services in the fast-growing and constantly changing field of electronic information, in order to meet the increasing demand from the present business and industrial sector for library services.
