COINDOC is a tool in the process of indexing storing, retrieving and distributing information from documents, and it can help solve internal information problems. POLYDOC/COINDOC is a system developed by Norwegian Centre for Informaties, NSI, as a pack of modul ar EDP programs ready for use on your own computer or on a service basis at NSI, Oslo.

The system is used for books, journals, reports, brochures, drawings, patents, photographs and person information, market information, product specifications etc. - in short all printed or written know-how for practical use.

The POLYDOC/COINDOC system is programmed in COBOL and is operative on UNIVAC 1108, IBM 370/155, IBM 360/30, or ICL 1904A computers and can be adapted to almost any EDP system with a COBOL compiler. The COINDOC software can be bought for a fixed price of N.kr. 35.000,- and an annual maintenance fee of N.kr. 7.000,-.

A number of companies are co-operating in solving common problems in the application of the COINDOC system, and experience is exchanged between the licensees, both on documentation problems and in the EDP technical area. Any new licensee can take part in this development and make use of the exchange facility secured in a standard POLYDOC contract.

Krog Scandinavian Inter-Library Co-operation in Computer-Based SDI Services and the Online Use of INIS for User Training http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/iatul/1973/papers/3 http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/iatul/1973/papers/3 Technological university libraries in the Scandinavian countries often have a dual function as university libraries and as national central libraries of technology. This applies to Helsinki University of Technology Library which, in conformity with statutory law, extends its services to any institution, enterprise or individual requiring scientific and technical information. The national responsibility includes library services and information services as well as user training. The daily routine therefore includes the provision of reference services and manual literature searches for industrial users. These, however, do not satisfy the current awareness needs of scientists and engineers engaged in research and development.

]]> Elin Törnudd SDI Obtained from Numerous Tape Services http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/iatul/1973/papers/2 http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/iatul/1973/papers/2 The information service performed by the Royal Institute of Technology handles requests from both university users and from industry. Fourteen databases are currently used for SDI purposes. As the library also has on-line facilities for retrospective searches of six databases in the ESRO/RECON network, it has been found that retro-searches usually initiate SDI-profiles for current awareness information.

In 1967 the Institute initiated its own database "Mechanical Engineering - MECHEN" and began a subscription to the tapes from the Institute for Scientific Information. The purpose was primarily to provide a service to Swedish manufacturers in the mechanical engineering field. However, the interdisciplinary nature of the ISI tapes attracted interest from many users in the universities. The total number of profiles in 1972 was 1,050. The Institute welcomes profiles from outside universities or companies through the intermediary of their own librarians. However, most contacts are carried out directly with the users. The back-up service giving full documentation is necessary for keeping the interest of the users, and places a heavy burden on the regular library service.

This report deals with the coverage, the operational and the performance functions. The system is of a general nature which permits inclusion of various databases of completely different tape formats. Any combination of elements of a bibliographic record can be searched. As the profile maintenance program becomes an essential element when the number of profiles is building up, an on-line facility for updating has been instalied. Thus, it is possible from a type-writer terminal to initiate, up-date and revise a profile at any time. Two such remote terminals are in operation, one 60 miles from Stockholm.

Special emphasis is laid upon the principles for free text searching and the problems of arranging the printout in such a way that it gives user satisfaction. At present a statistical approach is in operation. Since many databases have keywords or other subject indicators, a combination of free text search of titles and keywords is often used. There is no significant deviation in the user's reaction when subjected to printout from free text searches or from keyword searches.
