Hylomorphism: A viable restrictivist approach to material composition?

Winship C Varner, Purdue University

Abstract

This dissertation investigates whether Aristotelian hylomorphism (either traditional or contemporary variations) can be formulated to provide a viable restrictivist theory of composition. After situating various formulations of hylomorphism within the composition debate, criticizing rival proposals including unrestricted composition, compositional nihilism, and other competing restrictivist views, I conclude by proposing a version of Aristotelian hylomorphism that, I argue, has the virtue of offering a compelling answer to the Problem of Material Composition.
