Governance philosophy at the relational level: Putting stewardship into action
Abstract
In this dissertation I propose a model of leadership that integrates the motivational premise underlying governance theory with the process of exchange that defines the dyadic role-making process of relational leadership (e.g. LMX). Where relational leadership is based on the process of how leaders develop exchange-based relationships with followers, there is a gap in understanding of how a leader's value system or motive hierarchy defines the exchange process itself. By distinguishing between an intrinsic and extrinsic exchange process, I create a model of leadership that shows how the leader's motive hierarchy creates unique insights into how they seek to develop exchange relationships with followers. As a key outcome, I propose that steward-leaders create human capital while agent-leaders expend human capital.
