Spirituality, religiousness, coping strategies and multiple domains of functioning for adults with vision-related disability

Allyson R Matt, Purdue University

Abstract

This study examined the relationships between spirituality, intrinsic religiousness, and coping strategies (i.e., problem-focused and avoidant emotion-focused coping) and multiple domains of functioning (i.e., instrumental activities of daily living, life satisfaction, and community engagement) for adults with vision-related disabilities. The results indicated significant positive associations between spirituality and life satisfaction, and spirituality and community engagement. Age of onset, income, and health status were also positively associated with community engagement. Results also suggested that avoidant emotion-focused coping did not mediate the relationship between spirituality and instrumental activities of daily living, and problem-focused coping did not mediate the relationship between spirituality and life satisfaction. Also, problem-focused coping did not mediate the relationship between intrinsic religiousness and life satisfaction. Additionally, the results indicated that the younger (i.e., ages 18–40) individuals in the sample reported significantly less difficulty performing instrumental activities of daily living than their older (i.e., ages 41–64) counterparts. Finally, findings suggested that spirituality and intrinsic religiousness may be more influential in their association with instrumental activities of daily living, life satisfaction, and community engagement than avoidant emotion-focused coping. Counseling psychologists working with individuals with vision-related disabilities may benefit from using a client's existing spiritual or religious beliefs in the therapeutic process and from directing therapeutic intervention at the daily, psychological, and social domains of functioning rather than only the daily functioning domain.
