Essays on the pharmaceutical industry
Abstract
This dissertation is consists of four essays. The purpose of the dissertation was to study the strategic alliances in the biopharmaceutical industry. Many studies examine pharmaceutical companies' research and development outsourcing decisions and the distribution of control rights in licensing contracts. However, to the best of my knowledge ex-ante R&D contract terms and the determinants of the decision to sign strategic alliances for different stages of drug development have not been considered in the literature. The role of the Food and Drug Administration [FDA], which is the main regulatory agency in the biopharmaceutical market, has also not been investigated. By using different databases, I try to fill these gaps in the literature.
