The context of power and race in online social movement rhetoric: An analysis of White Nationalist cyber-rhetoric by/towards women and girls

Wendy K. Z Anderson, Purdue University

Abstract

White Nationalism continues to have a strong presence in U.S. society. The White Nationalist movement has reshaped itself to better connect with mainstream U.S. racial ideologies and values within online spaces. Specifically, White Nationalists have targeted women and girls with their choice of values, ideologies, constructions of their enemies, and cyber tactics. An analysis of White Nationalist online rhetoric within the context of U.S. culture offered a comprehensive understanding of how activists used narrow conceptions of race to further their movement interests.
