Factors that affect alumni loyalty at a public university

Cecelia D Lawley, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of undergraduate student involvement in extracurricular activities and the current financial contributions to the university. This research also examines the relationship of alumni participation in events/activities and alumni contributions to their alma mater. With the decrease in state funding, public universities can no longer survive solely on the support of the government. Institutions of higher education must turn to their alumni for private support. As the need for financial assistance to higher education increases, so does the need to understand why alumni contribute to their alma mater. This study investigates the relationship between extracurricular activities, alumni participation, graduation year, gender, and size of college on financial contributions to the university. These results are discussed in terms of providing a justification to the university administration of how best spend their limited resources to raise private donations from alumni.
