Analysis of work -life implementation: Corporate versus higher education

David John Thompson, Purdue University

Abstract

This study compared the implementation efforts of work-life strategy of colleges and universities to corporations. A secondary focus was to determine if there was any difference in the work-life strategy implementation between faculty and staff populations within colleges and universities. The Boston College Center for Work and Family's Excellence Index was administered to institutions of higher education which were members of the College and University Work/Family Association (CUWFA). Sixty-five individuals with work-life management responsibilities were sent invitations to participate. Twenty-seven valid responses were collected for a 41% return rate. The results of the CUWFA member surveys were compared against corporations (n = 91) that had previously completed the Excellence Index. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and post-hoe least-significant difference analysis. Work-life strategy implementation at colleges and universities is clearly behind those at corporations. Significant lower means for the elements of leadership, accountability, relationship building, communication, and the total of all elements were found for the categories of faculty, staff, and faculty/staff average. A trend toward significance with infrastructure was found as well. Although the means for five of seven elements for faculty were lower than staff, none were significant. Reliability and consistency testing were conducted on the Excellence Index using correlation coefficients and Cronbach's Alpha analysis. Strong linear associations were found for leadership, strategy, infrastructure, communication and measurement. The elements of relationship building and accountability showed poor reliability and consistency calling into question their usefulness and the findings of significance for the mean differences found in this study for those respective elements.
