Darlene A Lohman, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to document the step-by-step development and implementation of an effective, in-house principal preparation program that can be replicated by other school districts in similar situations. Vast literature documents the shortage of quality principal candidates but little research presents a viable solution to this growing problem. Therefore, this qualitative research study documents the story of one school district addressing the shortage of aspiring principals through development and implementation of an in-house principal preparation program. Research including state legal requirements along with a review of best practices for building administrators provides a basis for the program. Needs assessment, application process, choosing interns, and participation in the locally developed program are explained in detail. A detailed action plan, based on the results of this study as well as current research is presented. Five research questions are answered and discussed to determine key factors needed in developing and implementing an in-house principal preparation program. Data included surveys, interviews, and portfolios. The importance of this study is it will proffer reliable solutions to the growing shortage of viable principal candidates within school districts in the United States.
