Collaboration of minds with learning at the heart: A study of collaboration and organizational learning

Teresa Ellen Roche, Purdue University

Abstract

Fundamental competitive changes are occurring in the global marketplace due to the accelerated rate of advanced technologies, new and emerging industrial bases, and innovative marketing and distribution strategies. Organizations worldwide have recognized the need to collaborate with others to compete and cope in this ever-evolving business environment. The question no longer appears to be should an organization collaborate with others, but what type of collaborations should be formed and how can they be successful. Collaborations provide a path for organizations to leverage their resources and to enhance their overall competitive position. In many cases, the collaborative intent is to increase the organization's knowledge and skills, but the process for doing so is complex and confusing for many organizations. While the research field studying this phenomenon is still young, represents a mosaic of perspectives, and is lacking a clear consensus, this research study attempts to integrate and synthesize the literature from various disciplines on the topic of collaboration and organizational learning. By making a whole whose sum is greater than the sum of its parts, the researcher hopes practitioners in the field will benefit from the study as they plant the seeds of learning in this new competitive landscape.
