School counselor support for military students facing a parental deployment

Courtney Marie Oliver, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the ways school counselors are supporting students from military families with deployed or deploying parents in terms of emotional, behavioral, academic, and psychosocial support, as well as the methods used for identifying this student population at school. Seventy-seven professional school counselors from the state of Indiana participated in the study by answering the researcher-created survey, Identifying and Supporting Military Students Descriptive Questionnaire. The discussion includes best practice interventions being used, areas for future professional development, methods and responsibility for identifying students from military families, and school counselor awareness and support for this student population. Implications of the study and directions for future research are also discussed.
