Barriers in implementing the 5S system in the healthcare industry

Bret Michael Benjamin, Purdue University

Abstract

This qualitative research study seeks to discover the barriers preventing the most effective approach in implementing the 5S system within the healthcare industry. The interrelating themes and descriptors will be identified using grounded theory. The researcher will then interpret the meaning of the themes and descriptors. As healthcare prices increase, it is ideal for hospitals to reduce waste wherever possible. One way to reduce waste is by the use of visual management called the 5S system, a component of lean. 5S was originally used solely in manufacturing, making it important for research to be done to find the barriers in implementing 5S in a hospital setting. "The 5S methodology reduces waste through improved workplace organization and visual management" (Graban, 2012, p. 89). The primary goal of 5S is to provide the best patient care in the most effective way.
