Perceptions of older adults toward iPhones

Laura Elizabeth Williams, Purdue University

Abstract

The purpose of this study is the gain a better understanding of the reasons why older adults use iPhones. Through the use of two theories, the socioemotional selectivity theory (SST) and the technology acceptance model (TAM), initial themes were created and used in the interviewing of 12 participants over the age of 60. With a symbolic interactionist perspective, a thematic analysis was conducted using the qualitative data collected. As a result, five main themes emerged; these were perceived usefulness, communication, information access, entertainment, and perceived ease of use. This knowledge of motivational factors can help improve smartphone technology and even pave the way to better accessibility of this technology for an audience that is often forgotten. By doing so, we can keep seniors better connected to the world and to others, possibly improving the quality of life of older adults today and those of tomorrow.
