Conduct code influence on online behavior

Kris S Sulzberger, Purdue University

Abstract

It is not unexpected that individuals engage in disinhibited behavior in an environment where they are acting with anonymity. The use of information and communication technology is one factor that is thought to contribute to both disinhibition and feelings of anonymity. In studies of offline environments, ethical reminders, such as honor codes or use agreements, seem to offset the impact of anonymity. This work will examine whether the same seems to hold true for individuals in an online environment.
