Wasilla Girl, the Tea Party, and Obama the Anti-Christ: Examining cyberpropaganda in the age of new media

Abstract

The present project proposes that particular political videos posted on internet websites such as YouTube embody and disseminate fallacious representations of political figures and can usefully be classified as cyberpropaganda. The cyberpropaganda era is differentiated from earlier epochs through the potential access to a virtually infinite volume of images, text, and sound and the use of a distinctly postmodern rhetorical style. The rhetorical techniques of juxtaposition and paratactic association are utilized in the construction of cyberpropaganda videos and this project offers a rhetorical and semiotic interpretation of three rhetorical artifacts which exemplify these techniques. The analysis carefully notes the intricate ways the videos contribute to the emergence of cyberpolitics in the postmodern era.
